As the warm weather keeps threatening to finally arrive for good, it feels like the perfect time to start thinking about where to go to get away in the summer months. Keep reading to discover our top three destinations for your 2016 holiday.
Bordeaux, France – Situated in the area of France which currently produces the greatest volume of fine wines, Bordeaux is making a bid – and is a serious contender – to be recognised as the wine capital of the world. La Cité du Vin, a new museum dubbed the “Guggenheim of wine”, is set to open in June and hopes to shake off the fuddy-duddy and somewhat snobby image wine tourism is currently perceived to have.
Dublin, Ireland – 2016 marks the centenary of the Easter Rising, a pivotal event leading to Ireland gaining independence. As such, the country is making preparations for numerous commemorative events, including a major exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin which opened at the beginning of March. The 1916 Rebellion Walking Tour takes in landmarks such as Kilmainham Gaol, Trinity College and Dublin Castle. You’re bound to need some refreshment after all that, so a tour and tasting session at Dublin’s first new distillery in 125 years, the Teeling Whiskey Distillery, is a must.
Rio De Janeiro, Brazil – A minor sporting occasion you may have heard of called the Olympic Games is happening in Rio during the summer, so the city will be in the global spotlight throughout August. Tickets are still available for most of the events and the opening and closing ceremonies if you fancy attending, but it also has plenty to offer throughout the summer. Rio’s Museum Of Tomorrow opened earlier this year and focuses on how humanity must adapt to give us the best chance of avoiding catastrophic effects of climate change.
